| Through
a partnership with the Town of Bedford, Habitat
for Humanity of Greater Lowell has acquired nearly
three acres of land and a historic farmhouse located
at 130 North Road in Bedford. HFHGL plans to renovate
the existing house, and build seven new affordable
homes, all of which will be designated for deserving,
low-income families. To date, this is the largest
project HFHGL has undertaken. |
| |
| In
addition, it is the first HFHGL project to incorporate
eco-friendly, “green” building design
and techniques. As part of HFHGL’s green building
initiative, the entire neighborhood is slated to
undergo certification under the Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green
Building Rating System™. LEED is the nationally
accepted benchmark for the design, construction,
and operation of green buildings. Westford-based
architectural firm Building Science Consulting created
the “green” architectural designs and
has pledged its support to ensure that the home
meets LEED requirements. Compared to conventional
construction, building to certain LEED standards
could increase the home’s energy efficiency
by as much as 40 percent and significantly decrease
annual energy bills. |

| Groundbreaking
is estimated to begin in spring 2008; however, there
will be several opportunities to help fundraise,
coordinate events, and recruit volunteers in the
meantime. For more information on how you can get
involved with this project, please call (978) 692-0927,
or e-mail Jeffrey Clack, Bedford Local Partnership
chairperson, at bedfordhabitat@lowellhabitat.org.
